One - that we rely to much on materialistic objects, looks and perceptions.
Two - that to truly solve a problem and come out the other side a better, wiser and more knowledgeable person, we need to dig deeper, to find the primary cause of the distress.

These are the two main strings I got out of Inception today besides it being an amazing movie in every way; script, cast, score, locations, direction, themes, and projection. Relying on a spinning top for assurance of reality, is a clever idea and works effectively right until the black out of the last scene. But in our lives, real life, we need to see that what we are living in, whether it be triumph, horror, exhaustion, pain or joy, is actually our reality, whether we like it or not. We do not have a single object that we can rely on to make sure of this, as it just is. Some days I'm sure we all wish we were dreaming. We are mentally unstable, we are physically unstable, we are deep in thought, lost in confusion, hurt by the doings of ourselves or of others. But this is always going to be our reality.

But the idea of undoing, examining, reliving and then sorting out the layers of our onion, the layers of our world and our dreams, the layers of our own problems, is the amazingly moving and honest truth behind this blockbuster, Hollywood film. Struggles must be faced. Time must be challenged. We must challenge ourselves, and overcome fears, tears and dishonesty. I am not saying that we must block out these pains and pretend they don't exist, in fact, quite the opposite. We need to find a way to move forward in life, but as is portrayed in this feature, we have to find the courage to confront, explore and then let go of these fears.

As we see, it's never easy. Our darkest troubles are scary, some, terrifying. But living in fear, regret or under the power or control of another force or being, should never be any one's ideal. We need to be free. We have the right to make decisions. We are allowed to be who we want to be. You may feel like it is your safety zone, by always having it, just there, in the back of your mind. Or maybe in the front of your mind, controlling your every move. But, we must think of the future. What we really are compromising, missing and forgetting. We must think not only of ourselves, but of those around us and what we are doing to them, too. That is when it really hits home.

There are puzzles me must solve, staircases to climb, jumps and leaps even, to be taken. Some mazes seem never-ending, but lucky for us, in our world, these endless struggles will eventually become possible to resolve.

Dig deep, find the inner truth, the larger issues, fight and observe and come to understand those issues. And you will set yourself free.

  1. I saw Inception (and loved it!), but now I am wanting to see it again after reading this. I also think it is really important to recognize how our actions and lives are affecting others. Sometimes I get so caught up what is going on for me that I am oblivious to how it influences the people around me. Thanks for the reminder!
